Tarot and oracle decks can look very similar: illustrated cards, a question and a reading.
But they are built differently.
Tarot has a traditional structure. Oracle decks have much more freedom to create their own.
A standard tarot contains 78 cards divided into the Major and Minor Arcana.
Artwork, names and themes may change from deck to deck, but the underlying structure remains recognizable.
Oracle decks do not have a fixed number of cards.
A deck may contain 36, 40 or any other number the creator chooses. Its themes, categories and reading system can also be completely original.
That is why one oracle may be inspired by village life, another by mafia humour and another by the elements of nature.
Is tarot more complicated?
Not necessarily.
Tarot offers a larger established system to explore, but it can still be used very simply — even with one card.
Oracle decks can feel more immediate because they often explain their themes more directly.
What matters most is the individual deck and whether its language makes sense to you.
Which is better for beginners?
Whichever one makes you want to draw a card.
If you enjoy a structured traditional system, tarot may suit you.
If you prefer a specific theme, style or more independent card meanings, an oracle deck may feel more natural.
There is no requirement to start with one before the other.
Can they be used in the same way?
Often, yes.
Both tarot and oracle cards can be used for a Daily Card, a one-card question or a multi-card spread.
The main difference is where their meanings come from.
Tarot works within an established framework.
An oracle deck creates its own.
Neither is automatically better. They simply offer different languages for exploring a question.
